James Ford

James Ford

One of the key people seeking improvements to upward mobility in Charlotte will discuss this crucial mission at the Nov. 1 joint meeting of University City Connect business partners and local faith leaders.

The public is invited, as well, to hear James Ford, co-chair of Leading on Opportunity, speak on “Creating Opportunity by Connecting Education.”

The event is 8:30-10 am at Hilton Charlotte University Place.

About Ford and Leading on Opportunity

The Leading on Opportunity council of business and community leaders was formed as a result of a recommendation made by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Opportunity Task Force that convened to study the issues of economic mobility in Charlotte.

The mission of Leading on Opportunity is to convene and connect sectors across the community to implement the recommendations of the Task Force to improve economic mobility in Charlotte and Mecklenburg County, with special focus on early care and education, career and college readiness and family and child stability.

Ford, a former Garinger High School teacher and 2014 NC Teacher of the Year, co-chairs the group with Andrea Smith of Bank of America.
The 19-member council brings together Charlotte-Mecklenburg leaders spanning a range of disciplines and backgrounds – grassroots, government, neighborhood, business, philanthropy, faith and nonprofit.

As charged in the report, the organization will take a systemic approach to addressing the key determinants of early childhood education, college and career readiness, and family stability, while simultaneously focusing on the cross-cutting factors of segregation and social capital.
