From Aug. 1 to 15, you can donate books at University City Library or Keith Family YMCA.
Studies show the importance of mastering the art of reading by the third grade, so children can then begin to read to learn.
Not mastering reading sets a child back and can easily discourage them from excelling in all the other subjects.
Who will get the books?
The books will go to students at five University City elementary schools: Nathaniel Alexander, Hidden Valley, Newell, University Meadows and John Morehead Stem Academy.
Which books should you give?
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools has provided this list of suggested books to donate. Each book is used in the CMS curriculum. The bonus of donating these books is that students can both use them at school and have them to take home and read again and again for personal enjoyment.
Drop off your books from Aug. 1-15 at:
- University City Regional Library, 301 E. WT Harris Blvd. Open 9 am-8 pm Mondays-Thursdays; 9 am-5 pm Fridays and Saturdays; closed Sundays. 704-416-7200. Directions
- Keith Family YMCA, 8100 Old Mallard Creek Road. Open 5 am-9:30 pm weekdays; 7 am-7 pm Saturdays; 1-6 pm Sundays. 704-716-6700. Directions
