Scholarship successIn a great year for scholarships countywide, Mallard Creek High’s Class Act of 2017 brought in more academic and athletic awards than any other CMS high school – nearly $16 million.

And Vance High likely set a record with its whopping 550% jump in scholarship money over two years – to just over $10 million.

“This is fabulous work!” Mallard Creek High PTSA President Richmond Baker emailed to the Mallard Creek High community.

Just two years ago, only four Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools high schools received at least $10 million in scholarships. All four – Ardrey Kell, Myers Park, Providence High and South Mecklenburg – are located in south Charlotte.

That same year, Mallard Creek High had 116 students earning scholarships worth a total of $5.4 million, and 44 Vance High students collected $1.5 million in scholarships.

Fast-forward two years, and the changes are stunning. Mallard Creek saw a 200% increase in scholarship funding, with 184 students earning awards totaling $15.9 million.

Vance’s earnings jumped more than five-fold, with 118 students receiving scholarships!

Many CMS schools have shared in the surge of both scholarship money and students receiving them. A chart of scholarship money for all high schools shows a total of $91.9 million in 2014 vs. $157.8 million this spring.

The number of students receiving scholarships rose by nearly one third, from 2,542 in 2014 to 3,327 this spring. Academic awards accounted for 83% of the 2017 scholarships.
